As 2019 comes to a close, syracuse.com is looking back on the top 10 most-read Central New York entertainment stories of the year. It’s been a wild 12 months that included getting mocked by “The Simpsons” and “SNL” (and straight-up hated on by Pete Davidson), a 50th anniversary Woodstock concert that never happened, a local “Catfish” exposed, and a “badass” bachelorette from Syracuse.

10. Syracuse University named No. 1 party school again

Syracuse University was named the No. 1 party school again for the first time since 2014. The Princeton Review’s 2019 list also put SU in the top 20 for “lots of hard liquor," “lots of beer,” “reefer madness," Greek life and school spirit at sports games.

9. Vince Vaughn films movie in Syracuse

“Swingers" and “Wedding Crashers” star Vince Vaughn filmed “The Binge," American High’s sixth movie shot in the Syracuse area, this summer. More than 2,000 local extras were used for the upcoming Hulu comedy, a parody of “The Purge” where all drugs and alcohol are illegal in the future except for one party night a year.

Other movies shot in CNY in 2019 included “Paper Spiders” (Lili Taylor), “The Ultimate Playlist of Noise,” the first movie in a “Gabriel’s Inferno” trilogy, and the upcoming Sundance Film Festival selection “The Night House” (Rebecca Hall).

8. A “badass” bachelorette

The Bachelor” host Chris Harrison says a Syracuse woman on the upcoming season of the ABC dating show is “a badass." Tammy Ly, a 24-year-old real estate agent and model who graduated from Liverpool High School, was named as a contestant for Peter Weber’s heart on season 24 of “The Bachelor” premiering next month. Harrison called her a “symbol of the American Dream” and said “she might be my favorite story of the year.”

“This is what a badass she is: In high school, she wanted to wrestle. So she went out for the wrestling team -- the boys’ wrestling team. They told her no, so Tammy just kept showing up. Wouldn’t quit, and made the wrestling team. And by the way, went 7-1 in her wrestling matches against the boys... Badass."

7. David Muir buys $7 million house on Skaneateles Lake

ABC News “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir is keeping his roots in Central New York, buying a $7 million home on Skaneateles Lake this year. “This job takes me all over the world, and I can’t think of a better place to catch my breath," Muir said.

6. ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘SNL’ brutally mock Upstate New York

Upstate New York had to be treated for several burns this year after “The Simpsons” brutally mocked the region with a parody of the famous Frank Sinatra song “Theme from New York, New York” with scenes showing an empty Buffalo Bills stadium, Utica’s declining population, Rochester’s Kodak plant killed by smartphone cameras, and even Syracuse University’s Otto the Orange dancing with opioids. A few months later, “Saturday Night Live” took a jab at Upstate NY during apple-picking season, calling it “the part of NY state that has Confederate flags."

5. Jerry Seinfeld seriously hates Bobcat Goldthwait. But why?

A new episode of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” stirred up controversy this year when Jerry Seinfeld ranted for nearly two straight minutes about how much he hates Syracuse native Bobcat Goldthwait. The name was bleeped out, but it was clear who he was talking about: “He wasn’t funny... That’s why he had to do that stupid f---ing voice." The beef may have started when Goldthwait famously criticized Seinfeld for dating a 17-year-old girl when Seinfeld was 38.

4. Pete Davidson hates Syracuse

Speaking of hate, “Saturday Night Live” star Pete Davidson made it clear he did not enjoy filming the American High movie “Big Time Adolescence" in Central New York. While promoting its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, he accused Manlius Police of targeting him when he was pulled over in August 2018 and his friend Joey Gay was charged with marijuana possession.

“It sucked... The whole town of Syracuse blows,” Davidson said. “To be honest, they just found out I was there and tried to arrest me the entire time... There’s nothing going on there so they were hunting me down the entire time." Those words were not forgotten six months later when Davidson scheduled -- and then canceled -- a standup comedy show at the Syracuse Funny Bone.

3. MTV’s ‘Catfish’ exposes Syracuse woman who duped younger guy

Catfish" host Nev Schulman found the MTV reality show’s first-ever “serial Catfish stalker” in Syracuse. A man named “CJ” said he started talking to a 21-year-old New Jersey woman named “Shana” on Facebook when he was 17 and attending Corcoran High School. With the show’s help, he found out Shana was actually a 38-year-old woman living in the Syracuse area with five children.

2. TV newscaster changes

Syracuse University alumnus and Buffalo native Jeff Glor was replaced as “CBS Evening News” anchor this year in a major shakeup that put Norah O’Donnell in the seat once held by Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather and Katie Couric. In local television, CNY Central said goodbye to meteorologist Molly Mattot and anchor Allison Bybee, and hello to a few new faces, including former NewsChannel 9 anchor Farah Jadran.

1. Woodstock woes and memories

2019 marked the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, the iconic music festival that drew nearly half a million people to Upstate New York in 1969. Plans for a “Woodstock 50” concert at Watkins Glen, then Vernon Downs, fell apart largely due to organizational issues but original attendees had fun reflecting on the golden anniversary and shared the naked truth about what peace, love and music was really like.
