Which Three Domestic Airlines Offer The Best In-Flight Entertainment Experience? - Forbes

Back of the seat airline entertainment may be going the way of DVDs, but right now, that and other entertainment options are the elements passengers considered in the newest analysis of the best domestic airline experience.

Cabletv.com gathered info on the Top 10 domestic airlines for in-flight experience. To determine each airline’s ranking for in-flight entertainment setups, the data analysis team took a look at each U.S. airline company, and compared information.

Specific points of interest included in-seat entertainment consoles; the ability to access entertainment using a personal console (a tablet, laptop, or phone); access to USB or outlets, and the variety of movies, television channels, games, and music.

The report weighed these categories based on the level of priority, and came out with the following rankings, from first to last: JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines; Allegiant Air / Frontier Airlines / Spirit Airlines (tie)

Here’s a quick analysis. Options vary according to the class chosen.

JetBlue —#1

JetBlue offers seats with extra legroom, snooze kits with eye masks and earplugs, and the ability to watch live TV with 36 channels on E190 and A320 planes, plus over one hundred channels on A321 planes.

You also get power and USB outlets for your devices, which have access to free in-flight Wi-Fi, and free snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.

JetBlue’s Mint option premium service offers lay-down seats, headphones, artisanal food and ice cream, DIRECTV and SiriusXM Radio. You even get a free swag bag.

Delta Airlines —#2

Delta offers options such as hot towels, a meal (or two), snacks, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks as often as you want in premium service. On Delta One flights, you can get flat-bed seats.

Its Wi-Fi is about $16 (compared to free on JetBlue). Screens are even available on basic economy seats.

United Airlines — #3

United will let you buy Wi-Fi for $19, and also has United Private Screening, which acts as a media library you can access from your laptop or Apple and Android devices.

DIRECTV is free on select flights, with more than 100 TV channels, along with new movies and old favorites. And there’s the Vevo channel for music videos. Not all of United’s flights have power outlets.

The Bottom

You can get in-flight Wi-Fi from American, Alaska, and Southwest. The lack of Wi-Fi is the biggest reason for the last-place tie between Allegiant, Frontier, and Spirit airlines.

Frontier and Spirit. don’t offer the ability to watch in-flight entertainment on your own console, unlike Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Southwest, and United. Allegiant offers neither Wi-Fi, nor an entertainment console. And you have to pay premium prices for the snacks that other companies give out for free.
