Spring means lot of entertainment options available - The Pioneer News

Punxsutawney Phil came out of his burrow on February 2, 2020. He did not see his shadow which indicates we are due for an early end to winter! So, it’s time to start thinking about spring travel and entertainment.

Country legend Reba McEntire has had a Las Vegas residency since 2015. This has significantly limited her ability to tour. It has been several years since she played the Kentucky State Fair. Reba kicks off her 2020 area tour on March 20, 2020 at The Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana (about two hours to the west). This is the closest the tour gets to Louisville. This will also be the first time, fans in our area will have the opportunity to hear Reba perform songs from her newest cd “Stronger Than Truth.” I can’t imagine her not performing Freedom and Tammy Wynette Kind of Pain. These are the two best songs on the cd and are real true country music. One to never disappoint fans, I can’t imagine a Reba set list that doesn’t include Fancy, How Blue, Little Rock, Is There Life Out There, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, The Heart Won’t Lie, I’m a Survivor, Back to God and songs from her first full gospel cd “Sing It Now: Songs of Faith and Hope.” Get your tickets before they are gone at http://fordcenter.com/home/.

The Kentucky Derby is less than three months away. Often, I hear local folks say they have never been to the Oaks or Derby. But I am even more surprised by those who tell me they have never been to Churchill Downs. You can scratch a visit to Churchill Downs off your bucket list, and make it a Derby week visit by purchasing tickets for the annual Dawn at the Downs. Churchill offers affordable breakfast on “Millionaires’ Row” Monday thru Wednesday of Derby week. We went last year and took my mom and dad who are in their sixties and seventies. Churchill Downs not only provided a great breakfast with an amazing view of the track while Oaks’ and Derby contenders got their morning workouts in, but the staff provided great service and assistance getting my parents from the parking lot to “Millionaires’ Row.” They have lots of golf carts shuttling folks from the parking lot to the elevator. Then it is straight into an awesome Kentucky breakfast and to see the horses on the world-famous track. The Kentucky Derby Museum also offers backside tours Derby week, but the best time to take in a tour is on the Sunday after Derby. It almost guarantees you a chance to see the Oaks’ and Derby winner from a close distance. To plan your Derby week visit to Churchill Downs visit https://www.churchilldowns.com/.

Kentucky native and country singer Dwight Yoakam brings his unique pioneering style of country music to The Palace Theater on Derby Eve, May 1, 2020. This is the first time in several years that a country music concert has been held on Derby Eve so expect tickets to go fast. There is no bad seat in the house, and you will enjoy Dwight’s enthusiastically high energy show packed with hit after hit and several country standards. Dwight does an awesome job of putting his on spin on classic country hits such as Mama Tried, Ring of Fire, Streets of Bakersfield and The Bottle Let Me Down. My wife and daughter so him at Hometown Rising last year, and they said he puts on “one heck of a show.” Head to https://www.louisvillepalace.com/ to get your tickets.

The Today Show with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager comes into many of our homes every morning. They have developed quite a fan base (and that is an understatement). On May 8, 2020 you have an opportunity to hear Jenna Bush Hager live at the Kentucky Center for the Arts. Jenna is promoting her upcoming book “Everything Beautiful in Its Own Time.” The book has stories, note and lessons from both her paternal and maternal grandparents. This “story time” with Jenna promises to be full of moments that will warm your heart, make you laugh and maybe even shed a tear or two. Jenna Hager Bush is an accomplished and best selling author. Her first book was “Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope” is a must read. It is a non-fictional account of a 17 year old mother that she encountered while serving the needy and sick in Latin America. Jeana also wrote “Sisters First: Our Wild and Wonderful Life” with her sister Barbara Pierce Bush. It is an inside look at what life is like not only as a twin, but also what it is like being daughters and granddaughters of U.S. President’s. Both books are excellent reads and can be purchased at Amazon.com or in a local book store. To get tickets to Jenna’s tour head to https://www.kentuckyperformingarts.org/. Just a few seats remain.

Don’t wait! Start making plans to have fun this spring. Plus you’ll have lots of beautiful memories that you can treasure for years to come.
