TRUMP-AFGHANISTAN-THE LATEST

The Latest: Mattis says trust is question in Taliban talks

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Defense Secretary James Mattis says that when it comes to trying to negotiate an Afghanistan peace deal with the Taliban, the key question is whether they can be trusted.

Mattis cites past U.S. nuclear talks with the Russians, when the American side talked about “trust but verify.”

He tells CBS’ “Face the Nation” that “I think you want to verify, then trust” in dealing with the Taliban.

Mattis says the U.S. since the Bush administration, has “demanded that they break with al-Qaida” but “they’ve refused to do so.” He also says “we should never forget” that they were behind the Sept. 11 attacks.

President Donald Trump says he was set this weekend to meet at Camp David with leaders of the Taliban. But Trump says he called off that meeting, and a separate one with Afghanistan’s president, after a Taliban bombing that killed an American soldier and 11 other people.

OPIOID CRISIS-PURDUE-THE LATEST

The Latest: Purdue Pharma says settlement negations continue

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma says it’s continuing to negotiate a settlement over the toll of opioids, a day after some state attorneys general sent a letter to their colleagues saying talks with the company had reached an impasse and that they expected the company to file imminently for bankruptcy protection.

In the statement, the company said it believes “a settlement that benefits the American public now is a far better path than years of wasteful litigation and appeals.”

The company is being sued by more than 2,000 state, local and tribal governments. The first federal trial on opioids is scheduled to begin next month, adding pressure on the parties to settle.

Two attorneys general told officials in other states the company had rejected offers from the states.

PHILIPPINES-PRIEST ABUSE-THE RECKONING

A US priest, a Philippine village, and decades of secrecy

TALUSTUSAN, Philippines (AP) — The arrest of a Catholic priest on a Philippine island has deeply shaken the village where he spent nearly four decades.

It has also revealed how allegations of sex crimes by priests are still ignored, sometimes for decades, in one of the world’s most Catholic countries.

On Biliran, the island where Father Pius Hendricks lived, his fondness for boys had been widely discussed for decades among villagers, local officials and, according to a former Catholic brother, members of the clergy.

Hendricks is being held in a Manila jail, facing both Philippine and U.S. charges. His lawyers insist he is innocent of all charges.

AP-TROPICAL WEATHER-THE LATEST

The Latest: Dorian death toll rises to 44 in Bahamas

TORONTO (AP) — The government in the Bahamas says the death toll from Hurricane Dorian has risen by one to 44.

Health Minister Duane Sands on Sunday confirmed the toll in a WhatsApp message to The Associated Press.

Officials have warned that the number of deaths is likely to rise as security forces and other teams search devastated areas of the northern Bahamas.

The government also announced a telephone hotline where Bahamians can call to report family members who have been unaccounted for since the storm.

At least five deaths have been blamed on the storm in the Southeastern U.S. and one in Puerto Rico.

TRUMP

Trump’s North Carolina rally to be a test for his clout, GOP

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s rally in North Carolina will be more than just a measure of his clout in trying to elect a Republican to a key House seat.

His appearance Monday will be his first since a tough end of summer that saw slipping poll numbers, warning signs of an economic slowdown, and nonsensical battles over erroneous hurricane maps.

The special election Tuesday is considered a toss-up. A GOP defeat in a red-leaning state could portend trouble for Trump’s hopes for another term.

And the rally may also pose a different test: it will be held near where “Send her back” chants aimed at a foreign-born American congresswoman of color rattled the Republican Party and seemed to presage an ugly presidential campaign fought on race and division.

CONGRESS-WHAT’S NEXT

Congress returns to McConnell’s legislative ‘graveyard’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress returns for the fall session with pressure mounting on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to address gun violence, election security and other issues.

The Kentucky Republican leader has promised a “Grim Reaper” strategy of burying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s legislative priorities from House Democrats. But without a robust GOP agenda it could prove unsatisfying for lawmakers facing restive voters ahead of 2020 elections.

President Donald Trump has not fully explained what he’d like to see Congress accomplish, particularly on gun control. That leaves McConnell mainly focused on confirming the White House’s administrative and judicial nominees.

Big-ticket legislative victories are highly unlikely as the legislative calendar folds into campaign season. Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut complains that the Senate has become little more than an expensive lunch club.

US OPEN-THE LATEST

The Latest: Nadal edges Medvedev at US Open for 19th major

NEW YORK (AP) — Rafael Nadal has edged Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 to win his fourth U.S. Open title and 19th Grand Slam trophy overall.

The second-seeded Nadal’s victory Sunday moves him within one major championship of Roger Federer for the most by a man in tennis history.

This one did not come easily, even though Nadal took the first two sets and was ahead by a break at 3-2 in the third.

Medvedev came back by shifting styles and breaking Nadal in the last game of each of the next two sets to force a fifth.

But Medvedev couldn’t quite become the first man in 70 years to win a U.S. Open final after trailing two sets to none.

Brady starts his 20th season by beating Steelers 33-3

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots trolled the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday and then blew them out Sunday night.

A day after the acquiring former Steelers malcontent Antonio Brown, the defending Super Bowl champions showed they might not even need him, getting 341 yards and three touchdown passes from 42-year-old Tom Brady to beat Pittsburgh 33-3.

Phillip Dorsett caught two touchdown passes, including a 58-yard score, and Josh Gordon — another disgruntled receiver who wore out his welcome elsewhere — caught one TD pass. On the night New England unveiled its sixth NFL championship banner, Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman caught six passes for 83 yards and also completed a throw to help the Patriots begin their quest for back-to-back titles.

The last team to do that: New England in 2003 and ’04.

Facing the last team to beat them, the Patriots opened a 20-0 lead before Pittsburgh kicked a field goal on fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 10:17 left in the third quarter. Brady responded with a 58-yard touchdown pass to Dorsett and a 27-3 lead.

Dorsett, who will be moving down the depth chart Monday when the Patriots make Brown’s signing official, had four catches for 95 yards and the first multi-score game of his career.

Ben Roethlisberger completed 27 of 47 passes for 277 yards and an interception, with much of the production coming on non-scoring drives in garbage time. The offense showed the effects of losing two of its biggest playmakers: Brown, who talked and tweeted his way out of both Pittsburgh and Oakland in one offseason, and running back Le’Veon Bell, a two-time All-Pro who sat out all of last season to avoid a franchise tag.

In their place, James Conner gained 21 yards on 10 carries; the Steelers gained only 32 yards rushing in all. Top receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster caught six passes for 78 yards, 26 of it coming on one throw in the final six minutes with the Steelers already trailing 33-3.

The drive ended when Roethlisberger threw it into the end zone from the 41-yard line and was picked off by Devin McCourty.

The Steelers had five full possessions in the first half and punted on four of them, going three-and-out three times.

AB NEGATIVE

Brown, who asked for and was granted his release by Oakland on Saturday morning and then agreed to terms with the Patriots in the afternoon, and was not yet eligible to play.

There was no sign of him at the stadium. The Patriots are expected to announce on Monday the one-year deal that will guarantee the four-time All-Pro $9 million. Coach Bill Belichick declined to comment on Brown during the Patriots pregame radio show.

BANNER NIGHT

The Patriots made room for another Super Bowl memento above their south end zone.

The team unveiled their sixth championship banner before the game in a ceremony that included fireworks and a highlight video projected onto a screen covering much of the field.

Drew Bledsoe, Ty Law, Willie McGinest, Rob Ninkovich and Martellus Bennett brought out the first five Lombardi Trophies. Owner Robert Kraft brought out the one the team won in February by beating the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 — the one that was dented by Rob Gronkowski when he used it for batting practice at the Boston Red Sox opener.

Kraft received a big cheer from the fans, who seemed unbothered by charges that he solicited prostitution in a Florida massage parlor. Gronkowski, who retired in March, also received a loud cheer.

INJURIES

Steelers: Linebacker T.J. Watt left with a hip injury and did not return.

Patriots: Linebacker Marcus Cannon had a shoulder injury.

UP NEXT

Steelers: Host the Seattle Seahawks next Sunday.

Patriots: Visit Miami next Sunday.

BOAT FIRE-CALIFORNIA

Search warrants served in California boat fire investigation

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities are serving search warrants at the California company that owned the scuba diving boat that caught fire and killed 34 people last week.

Santa Barbara County sheriff’s Lt. Erik Raney says the warrants served Sunday are part of the ongoing investigation by local and federal officials into the tragedy. He says authorities are searching Truth Aquatics’ offices in Santa Barbara and the company’s two remaining boats.

Thirty-four people died when the Conception burned and sank before dawn on Sept. 2. They were sleeping in a cramped bunkroom below the main deck and their escape routes were blocked by fire.

The bodies of all but one victim have been recovered. The search for the final victim was suspended until later week because of strong winds and rough seas.

GEORGIA-CARGO SHIP-THE LATEST

The Latest: 4 missing after cargo ship overturns off Georgia

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says rescuers have been stymied in their search for the remaining four crew members of a cargo ship overturned near a Georgia port by a fire onboard the vessel.

Coast Guard Capt. John Reed said Sunday afternoon that rescue teams safely evacuated 20 people from the ship in St. Simons Sound, but then determined the situation was too risky to go further inside the vessel.

Reed says rescue teams, which involve federal, state and local agencies, are trying to stabilize the Golden Ray cargo ship to continue their search for the missing crew members. He says they have been unable to determine if the fire has been extinguished.

The cause is under investigation. The ship is lying on its side in St. Simons Sound near the Port of Brunswick.
