Cyrus’ rep initially released a statement
Fans of Cyrus and Hemsworth were shocked by the news of the couple’s split, as her rep released a statement explaining: “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. A source close to Cyrus explained that it’s been hard for the singer to give up on their relationship, telling PEOPLE: “They have a long history together, and that’s a huge part of why she has a hard time letting him go.”
The insider added, “At the end of the day, she wants to be happy, and she genuinely wants Liam to be happy too,” sharing that their separation “is for the best” right now.
What went wrong?
The couple hasn’t revealed exactly what was the root of the split, but a source told E! News that “they were drifting apart,” sharing, “They have been trying to make it work for months now but haven’t felt they were connecting on the level they were feeling when they got married last year. It’s been a rough year.”
Cyrus has been busy professionally, with the source noting that “they have been spending a lot of time apart,” explaining that Hemsworth was “focused on a more simplified lifestyle while Miley has been preparing for a new wave of her music career. She has been ready to put out music and be back in the game touring and performing. They really grew apart.”
“Miley and Liam have still been communicating and it wasn’t a messy split but they have decided they are at different points in their lives currently,” the source added.
Have they had a ‘toxic’ relationship?
Amid all the speculation is a report that claims Hemsworth’s family is concerned they might get back together. A source told The Sun Online: “Miley and Liam both keep saying the word ‘separated’ not ‘divorcing’ which has his family really worried they’re leaving the door open to get back together in the future.”
The source continued: “They think Liam should cut Miley off and can’t stand the idea of them getting back together. Nobody wants that. They think it’s been on and off so many times that everyone worries about him getting sucked back into the relationship and getting his heart broken again.”
“It’s been toxic for way too long. They’re not meant to be together,” the source shared.
