Terminator co-creator James Cameron has teased a prospective
Dark Fate trilogy, saying there is a "greater story" to be told in subsequent films. The franchise's original creator, who returned to produce the new sequel, revealed that the filmmakers view
Dark Fate as the beginning of a potential three-film arc, though he admitted that the prospects of two future installments would largely depend on how the upcoming Terminator flick fares at the box office.
"We spent several weeks breaking story and figuring out what type of story we wanted to tell so we would have something to pitch to Linda [Hamilton]," Cameron told
Deadline. "We rolled up our sleeves and started to break out the story and when we got a handle on something we looked at it as a three-film arc, so there is a greater story there to be told.
"If we get fortunate enough to make some money with Dark Fate we know exactly where we can go with the subsequent films," he added.
The visionary filmmaker acknowledged that there was a lot of momentum around the Tim Miller-directed project, as the team attempted to strip everything back to basics to provide a "blank slate" that would disregard
some of the previous timelines in the Terminator franchise to instead pick up directly after the events of the original
Terminator and its sequel
Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
"One of the things that seemed obvious from looking at the films that came along later was that we would need to get everything back to the basics and that we would need to avoid the mistakes of making things overly complex and that we needed to avoid stories that jump around in time and one that goes backward and forward in time," he told the outlet, explaining their rational.
James Cameron is not the only name to have returned to this new project, as both
Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger have reprised their respective roles as Sarah Connor and
another version of the T-800 model. Elsewhere,
Edward Furlong, who starred as John Connor in T2, also re-joined the cast alongside newcomers Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, Gabriel Luna, and Diego Boneta.
